The four-metre-long reed vessels – known as caballitos de totora in Spanish, or “little reed horses” – are placed upright on their ends by the promenade on El Mogote beach so that the seawater drains away and they are ready to be used the next morning.

The emphasis on Caleb in the first episode made it seem like the show would focus on him, much in the way Discovery focused on Michael Burnham, but he took a back seat as the show explored the other characters as well as its setting. Episode two, “Beta Test,” focused on diplomacy, a long-standing theme of Star Trek, and even shook up the status quo by moving the Federation headquarters from Earth to Betazed.

By the 2010s, people had begun to notice that there had been no mass unemployment of bank tellers. In 2015, James Bessen published a book called Learning by Doing, using the non-automation of bank tellers as a central example; soon it became a sort of load-bearing parable about what Matt Yglesias called “the myth of technological unemployment.” From Bessen the story diffused to Autor and Acemoglu; then to the economics bloggers; then to people like Eric Schmidt, who cited the ATM story in 2017 as one reason why he was a “denier” on the question of technological job loss.
